Local & National Involvement - Artrain RI/USA

Artrain USA
Artrain USA is a unique art museum on rails that fulfills its mission of enriching lives and building communities through the arts by bringing visual art exhibitions and programs directly to communities that have limited access to museums or collections.

The Nation's Railroads provide the transportation for Artrain USA, while many other contributions come from corporate and individual donations, and foundation and government grants.

Mission
Artrain USA's mission is to enrich lives and build communities through the arts. Artrain USA fulfills its mission by bringing visual art exhibitions and programs directly to communities who have limited access to museums or art collections.

Many communities have found that bringing Artrain USA to town often serves as a catalyst for exciting and valuable collaborations between schools, businesses, local government and art organizations that last far beyond Artrain USA's visit.

Current  National Exhibition
Artrain USA's 15th exhibition focuses on how Native artists are influenced by the popular culture of today and explores the commonalities of Native and non-Native people in North America. Curated by Joanna O. Bigfeather, the exhibition will travel onboard Artrain USA from April 2004-April 2007. Click here for more information.

Artrain/RI
The Rhode Island Indian Council is in the process of raising funds to bring Artrain USA to Rhode Island, and to organize a statewide symposium entitled “Come to the Table with Us,” scheduled to take place the week of September 6, 2005. The RIIC plans to host a series of events designed to bridge communities and promote better understanding between the many diverse groups living in New England. The symposium will include a day-long gathering of individuals to discuss sensitive issues such as sovereignty, economic and legal justice, leadership, and historical perspective.

An emphasis on Artrain/RI will be placed on the contemporary life and art of today’s natives.

To participate in Artrain as a volunteer, artist or to send a contribution, contact Marta V. Martinez at (401)781-1098 or click here to send an E-Mail.
