About Algonquin House

The Administrative Offices of The Rhode Island Indian Council are located at 807 Broad Street, also known as the Algonquin House.

History of Algonquin House
Algonquin House was built in 1895 as the “Home for the Aged Men and Aged Couples,” which served the needs of the elderly on the Southside of Providence.  In 1994, the Steere House Corporation donated the building to the Rhode Island Indian Council when it opened a new  nursing facility at Rhode Island Hospital.

Algonquin House has become a focus for all on-going and future development on Broad Street and the surrounding neighborhoods. The Rhode Island Indian Council manages the building, and offers services through its tenants who address the needs of citizens living in the Southside of Providence.

The building now houses over 55 local, private, and non-profit grassroot organizations, serving various ethnic groups, and includes youth programs, job training, legal services, cleaning services, architectural design, and more.

The rebirth and growth of Providence’s Southside has fostered an increasing need for quality business services and reasonably priced office space.  Additionally, there is a demand for conference and meeting space, and shared commercial space.

RIIC's Mission & Algonquin House
While the primary mission of Rhode Island Indian Council is to serve Native American people, through the mission of Algnoquin House, it can also provide support to the melting pot of people living in Providence by renting space and supporting the consortium of services being offered by its tenants.

The RIIC officially opened Algonquin House in 1996 with four tenants and a dream of remodeling the building in order to meet the increasing needs of residents of South Providence.  Today that dream continues to move ahead.
