The Annual RIIC Pow Wow was founded by William “Big Toe” Wilcox, Garrison E. “Guy yen twaga” Parker, and Kenneth “Spotted Eagle” Brown, in 1978. The first Pow Wow was held at Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island, where it is still held to this day. The Pow Wow was part of the Algonquin Indian School, a Native American cultural program at the Rhode Island Indian Council, which was at the time, located at 56 Washington Street in Providence, R.I.
Over the past thirty-one years, staff of the Rhode Island Indian Council have promoted Native American awareness at their annual Pow Wow. Native Americans talk about their culture and traditions, while Native American vendors sell native foods, crafts, and jewelry.
At the Pow Wow Native Americans share cordial and communal time together with families and friends, exchanging news of what’s happening in Indian Country. There is also a time for singing, drumming, dancing, and rejoicing.
